"From 16 to 19 March 2026 we participated in a study visit in Finland under the CERV project "Poetry 4 Participation". We got to know the project partners from Italy, Poland, Belgium, Slovakia, Cyprus, and, of course, Finland. We visited the public libraries in Liminka and Raahe in the region of North Ostrobothnia and there we had a unique opportunity to learn about their initiatives and events for the public.

The library is much for that a place where to borrow a book-public libraries here are key actors and places that foster active citizenship, democracy, social cohesion and participation in the local community, with special involvement of young people and children.

One of the most remarkable impressions was the fact that users can  access the library facilities even when the workers are not present, as one of the core values is mutual trust and respect between the institution and the community.

The library in Raahe helps with integration of migrant people by offering guidance and books adapted for the learners of the famously beautiful and difficult Finnish language. At the same time, migrant people are encouraged to share their own languages and cultures with local residents. There is also a growing book collection of literature about feminism and gender studies in Finnish, as well as an exhibition space, which on this occasion hosted a project featuring tactile artworks with translations into Braille. During the visit we got to know about the reading dogs methodology that helps children gain confidence when practicing reading, the children’s elected library president (a toy snake) and met the wonderful people who work in the libraries and make all of this possible. We also learned about and tried out participatory methodology that was created and is facilitated in a shared project with libraries, youth organisations and vocational education institutions in order to foster active citizenship and participation in the democratic life among young people through collaboration between these institutions."

"Del 16 al 19 de marzo de 2026 participamos en una visita de estudio en Finlandia en el marco del proyecto CERV “Poetry 4 Participation”. Allí conocimos a los socios del proyecto de Italia, Polonia, Bélgica, Eslovaquia, Chipre y, por supuesto, Finlandia. Visitamos las bibliotecas públicas de Liminka y Raahe, en la región de Ostrobotnia del Norte, donde tuvimos una oportunidad única de conocer sus iniciativas y actividades dirigidas al público. Las bibliotecas son mucho más que lugares para coger libros prestados: aquí son actores clave que fomentan la ciudadanía activa, la democracia, la cohesión social y la participación en la comunidad local, con especial implicación de jóvenes y niños/as/xs. Una de las impresiones más destacadas fue el hecho de que las personas usuarias pueden acceder a las instalaciones de la biblioteca incluso cuando no hay personal presente, ya que uno de los valores fundamentales es la confianza y el respeto mutuo entre la institución y la comunidad. La biblioteca de Raahe apoya la integración de las personas migrantes ofreciendo orientación y libros adaptados para quienes aprenden el famoso y a la vez difícil idioma finés. Al mismo tiempo, se anima a las personas migrantes a compartir sus propias lenguas y culturas con la población local. Además, la biblioteca cuenta con una creciente colección de literatura sobre feminismo y estudios de género en finés, así como un espacio expositivo que en esta ocasión acogió un proyecto con obras táctiles con traducciones al braille. Durante la visita conocimos la metodología de los “perros lectores”, que ayuda a los niños, niñas y niñxs a ganar confianza al practicar la lectura, así como a la presidenta infantil de la biblioteca (una serpiente de juguete). También tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a las maravillosas personas que trabajan en las bibliotecas y hacen posible todas estas iniciativas. Además, aprendimos y probamos una metodología participativa creada y desarrollada en un proyecto conjunto entre bibliotecas, organizaciones juveniles y centros de formación profesional, que tiene el objetivo de fomentar la ciudadanía activa y la participación democrática de la juventud a través de la colaboración entre estas instituciones."
